Dr Joe Santoro is an educational psychologist with a particular interest in understanding how children learn, and why some learners thrive while others experience unexpected challenges at school. His work focuses on developing a deep understanding of each child’s individual learning profile, including their cognitive strengths, language development, academic skills, attention, executive functioning, and emotional factors that may be influencing learning and school engagement.

Joe provides comprehensive educational and developmental assessments, as well as individual consultation to support learning, school engagement, academic confidence, and learning-related emotional wellbeing (such as test anxiety or school-based stress).

A central part of Joe’s approach is not simply measuring performance, but carefully interpreting how different parts of a child’s profile fit together. Assessment findings are considered in the context of the child’s developmental history, classroom functioning, learning behaviours, emotional wellbeing, and day-to-day experiences at home and at school. Reports are designed to move beyond scores and labels, helping families, teachers, and other professionals understand the why behind a child’s learning profile, and providing practical, evidence-informed recommendations that can guide meaningful support over time.

Common referrals include students experiencing difficulties with reading, spelling, writing, or maths, concerns regarding attention, working memory, or executive functioning. Joe also has a special interest in giftedness or twice-exceptionality, and children whose learning profile may be more complex or not yet fully understood.

ASSESSMENT

Understanding how your child learns can be one of the most important steps in supporting their confidence, progress, and overall school experience.

Assessments are designed to develop a deeper understanding of your child’s individual learning profile, including the cognitive, language, academic, attentional, executive functioning, and emotional factors that may be influencing learning.

Each assessment is tailored to the individual child. Findings are carefully interpreted in the context of developmental history, classroom functioning, learning behaviours, and everyday experiences at home and at school. Comprehensive reports are designed to provide meaningful insight, practical recommendations, and clear next steps for families, schools, and other professionals involved in your child’s support.

Specific Learning Disorders

Assessment of learning difficulties in areas such as:

  • Reading and Spelling (Dyslexia)

  • Written Expression (Dysgraphia)

  • Mathematics (Dyscalculia)

These assessments help identify underlying factors contributing to learning difficulties and guide targeted intervention and school-based support.

Giftedness and Twice-Exceptionality (2e)

Assessment for students who may demonstrate advanced reasoning, creativity, or strong intellectual potential, including those who may also experience learning, attention, or emotional challenges.

These assessments can help identify:

  • Intellectual giftedness

  • Asynchronous development

  • Twice-exceptional (2e) learning profiles

  • Underachievement in highly capable learners

Attention and Executive Functioning

  • Assessment of skills related to:

  • Attention and concentration

  • Organisation and planning

  • Working memory

  • Self-regulation

  • Task persistence and learning behaviours

This may include screening for the impact of ADHD-related difficulties on learning and school functioning where clinically relevant.

School Readiness and Early Learning

Assessment for younger children who may be experiencing difficulties with:

  • Early literacy development

  • Language development

  • Attention and self-regulation

  • Early numeracy skills

  • School engagement and classroom adjustment

These assessments help identify early learning needs and guide appropriate support during the early years of schooling.

Intellectual and Adaptive Functioning

Assessment where there may be broader concerns regarding:

  • General cognitive development

  • Adaptive functioning

  • Learning support needs

  • Intellectual disability

These assessments can help inform educational planning, school supports, and access to appropriate services.
